Bithumb Exchange Seeks Court Intervention to Recover $8M Bitcoin Payout Error
South Korea's second-largest cryptocurrency exchange, Bithumb, has escalated a legal battle to recover seven Bitcoins (worth approximately $8 million) mistakenly credited to users during a February promotional campaign. The error occurred when staff accidentally selected "BTC" instead of Korean won, resulting in 249 winners receiving 620,000 Bitcoin each in internal accounts—a theoretical $40 billion windfall.
Within minutes, users liquidated 1,788 BTC before Bithumb froze affected accounts. The incident triggered volatility, with Bitcoin's KRW pair briefly plunging to 80 million won. Despite repeated demands, a small group of users refuses to return the funds, prompting the exchange to seek judicial intervention.
